What You Need to Know About Microneedling Treatments
Microneedling—also known as collagen induction therapy—is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that uses a medical-grade device with fine, sterile needles to create tiny, controlled microinjuries in the skin. This process stimulates the body’s natural wound-healing response, increasing the production of collagen, elastin and growth factors, which are essential for maintaining skin firmness and elasticity. Most patients require a series of treatments (typically three to six sessions) spaced four to six weeks apart for optimal results.
Microneedling can gradually improve:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Acne scars and surgical scars
- Enlarged pores
- Uneven skin tone and texture
- Sun damage and hyperpigmentation (dark spots)
- Stretch marks
Are There Any Side Effects?
Microneedling requires minimal downtime compared to more aggressive resurfacing treatments and is generally safe for most skin types. Your licensed aesthetician will discuss potential side effects with you before treatment.
How Should I Prepare?
Two to three weeks before treatment, avoid Botox, dermal filler injections or chemical peels.
Three to five days before treatment, avoid the following to reduce the risk of irritation or complications:
- Retinol or retinoids
- Exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA)
- Harsh scrubs
- Waxing or hair removal in the treatment area
- Excess sun exposure or tanning
- Blood-thinning medications or supplements (please speak with your doctor before discontinuing medication)
On the day of treatment, please arrive with clean skin free of makeup, lotion or sunscreen.
What Should I Expect During Treatment?
The procedure lasts about 90 minutes.
- Consultation: The aesthetician will assess your skin to confirm that you are a good candidate for the procedure before treatment.
- Numbing: A topical anesthetic (numbing cream) will be applied to maximize comfort.
- Microneedling Treatment: The treatment will be performed with the FDA-cleared CytoPen for precise, targeted refinement of small areas. Epidermal Growth Factors and Cytokines are infused during treatment to enhance skin renewal.
- Post-Treatment: A soothing mask and red-light therapy will be used to calm inflammation and promote faster healing.
What Should I Expect After Treatment?
Skin may appear red and feel warm (like a sunburn) for one to three days, and mild flaking may occur around days three to five.
For post-treatment care:
- Avoid makeup for 24 hours.
- Use gentle skincare and broad-spectrum SPF daily.
- Avoid intense exercise, saunas and direct sun exposure for 24 to 48 hours.
Collagen production continues for several weeks, with visible improvements typically seen within two to four weeks after treatment.
Who Is a Candidate?
Microneedling may not be recommended for individuals who:
- Have active skin infections or cold sores
- Have uncontrolled rosacea or certain medical conditions
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Are taking blood thinners
- Have a history of keloid scarring
- Have used isotretinoin (Accutane) within the past six to 12 months
