What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture is a medical therapy that involves a strategy of inserting very thin needles into specific points of the body to activate the body’s natural healing capability. Acupuncture has been used as a treatment option for thousands of years to relieve a variety of physical ailments and promote health and wellness. By helping restore balance, this treatment promotes circulation, which can help improve the health of various organs and tissues so the body can heal efficiently.

Acupuncture can treat a wide range of health conditions, including:

Chronic Pain

including fibromyalgia, arthritis, and migraines

Musculoskeletal Problems

How long do the effects last?2026-08-11T13:34:21+00:00

How effective acupuncture is or how long the effects last depend on a multitude of factors. Some patients experience relief after one session. However, those with more severe conditions will likely benefit from a consistent schedule of sessions. You will work with your acupuncturists to determine the treatment plan that best addresses your condition.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Be prepared to discuss your current medications, symptoms, and overall health.

What can I expect during my first appointment?2026-08-11T13:35:06+00:00

Your first appointment is typically 60 minutes. Prior to treatment, the acupuncturist will review your health history and discuss your symptoms, your medical history, any medications and supplements you take, as well as your sleep, stress, digestion, energy levels, and lifestyle. As part of the assessment, your acupuncturist may also check your pulse and examine your tongue, which are common practices in traditional Chinese medicine.

What can I expect during treatment?2026-08-11T13:35:21+00:00

You’ll lie comfortably on a treatment table, usually on your back, stomach, or side depending on the treatment area. Needles of varying lengths will be inserted into certain areas of your body. The number of needles utilized varies. When the needle is inserted, you may feel a light pinch. When the needle is in position, you may feel the sensations of tingling or pressure at the needle site. If you feel pain or discomfort during treatment, tell your acupuncturist right away. Once the needles are in place, you will rest for a minimum of 20 minutes. During this time, you may experience a state of deep relaxation and fall asleep. Once the appointment is complete, the needles will be removed and disposed of.
