What Is Cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy is a treatment that uses extreme cold temperatures to promote the body’s natural healing process. Our specialized whole-body chamber stimulates circulation, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues and organs more efficiently. Cryotherapy may:
- Reduce inflammation
- Relieve muscle soreness
- Support injury recovery
- Improve joint mobility
- Promote energy and uplift mood
Does Cryotherapy Hurt?
Most people do not find cryotherapy painful. You may feel intense cold, tingling, numbness and/or a brief stinging or prickly sensation. These feelings usually fade quickly once the session ends.
What Is the Difference Between Cryotherapy and Ice Baths?
Both cryotherapy and ice baths offer evidence-based benefits, but they differ significantly in how the body is exposed to cold, including temperature intensity, duration and method of exposure.
Cryotherapy
- Vaporized liquid nitrogen (extremely cold air)
- Temperature: -130°F to -180°F
- Duration: 1–3 minutes
Ice Bath
- Cold water and ice
- Temperature: 50–59°F
- Duration: 10–15 minutes
How Long Do the Effects of Cryotherapy Last?
How effective cryotherapy is or how long the effects last depend on a multitude of factors. The immediate effects of skin cooling last for about five minutes, but the changes in inflammatory markers and endorphins have been observed for days.
How Should I Prepare?
Twenty-four hours prior to your cryotherapy treatment, avoid shaving or waxing the treatment area. Freshly shaved or waxed skin can be more sensitive and may increase the likelihood of irritation or discomfort from extreme cold exposure.
On the day of treatment, ensure skin is clean, dry and free of lotions or oils. Skin irritation or cold burns may result if skin isn’t properly prepped or protected.
Prior to treatment, remove all jewelry and external piercings.
Be prepared to notify the technician prior to treatment if you have any metal implants or prosthetics, skin irritation or cuts.
What Should I Expect During Treatment?
During your cryotherapy session, you will be required to wear your undergarments; they cannot have metal accessories.
Protective gloves, socks and footwear will be provided for you.
Treatments are closely monitored by a technician to keep you safe and comfortable.
You may end the session for any reason at any time (e.g., lightheadedness or anxiety).
Avoid inhaling the nitrogen fumes during treatment. Although non-toxic, they are devoid of oxygen and excessive inhalation can result in fainting.
What Should I Expect After Treatment?
Everyone responds differently to cryotherapy. Immediately following treatment, you may notice temporary redness, tingling or a cooling sensation, which typically resolves quickly. Many individuals report feeling refreshed, energized and experiencing reduced muscle soreness.
To support recovery and maximize the benefits of your session, you should avoid exposure to extreme heat, strenuous exercise and alcohol after treatment.
Who Is a Candidate?
Cryotherapy is ideal for athletes and active individuals recovering from muscle soreness or injury, those managing chronic inflammation or pain, and individuals seeking support for skin health or overall wellness.
Cryotherapy is not appropriate for everyone. Please consult your physician before participating if you are pregnant or have a chronic medical condition, including:
- Heart, cardiovascular, circulatory, or blood pressure conditions
- Respiratory or breathing disorders (including asthma, COPD, or emphysema)
- Recent major medical events or procedures (such as heart attack, stroke, or surgery)
- Implanted medical devices (such as a pacemaker or loop recorder)
- Neurological conditions or uncontrolled seizures
- Blood clotting, bleeding, or vascular disorders
- Open wounds, burns, or skin infections
- Current fever, illness, or active infection
- Sensitivity or adverse reactions to cold exposure
- Conditions affecting mobility, bladder control, or safe physical participation
