How to Choose the Right Skin Care Service for You
If you look in the mirror and the image looking back at you doesn’t reflect how you truly feel, then a medical-grade skin care treatment might be right for you. But which type of treatment could benefit you the most?
“Choosing the right service starts with knowing your motivation and your goals,” says Pamela Dunn, aesthetician at Atlantic Health System’s Chambers Center for Well-Being. “We’ll then help take you from point A to point B and help you achieve wellness for your skin, which is the largest organ of your body.”
If you’re just starting out
For people who never had any type of prior skin treatment, Dunn typically recommends starting with a , a one-hour session designed to help make your skin more radiant. “It’s an easy, breezy facial that can benefit almost anyone,” Dunn says.
During a custom facial, your aesthetician will ask you a few simple questions and perform a quick assessment of the skin. They may then recommend additional treatments based on what’s learned.
If you have thinning skin or wrinkles
Microneedling—also called collagen induction therapy (CIT)— is an anti-aging technique that can help promote new cell growth, increase collagen production, reduce wrinkles, plump up facial skin and improve elasticity.
During a one-hour microneedling session, your aesthetician applies a special gel that numbs the face and improves absorption. They then use an FDA-cleared device called a SkinPen. “The pen creates microinjuries to the skin, but because you are numb, you don’t feel anything,” Dunn says. The microinjuries invigorate your body’s natural healing ability, prompting it to produce collagen. After the treatment, Dunn applies calming gel to the face for added comfort.
Dunn recommends people receive at least three microneedling treatments for best results.
If you have fine lines and sun damage
A cool peel can revise, refine, and brighten the appearance of the skin. While traditional chemical peels use acids and harsh materials that warm the skin, cool peel uses a special technology called Environ® that delivers a cooling treatment while preserving the architecture of the skin. “It’s extremely comfortable for the client,” Dunn says.
Cool peels can be combined with microneedling treatments to increase collagen as needed.
Best results from cool peel occur after a series of six 60-minute treatments.
If you have blotchy skin
A treatment called microdermabrasion helps smooth and brighten the skin and reverse the effects of aging. It’s also a proven treatment for hyperpigmentation and works well to refine scars from acne. During a treatment, an aesthetician uses a handheld device filled with sodium bicarbonate crystals to remove dead skin cells, allowing new, healthier skin cells to grow.
Microdermabrasion is available in a full 60-minute treatment or a 45-minute express treatment.
If you have acne
Adults and teens may benefit from clear skin treatments. They use antioxidants, brighteners and moisturizers to exfoliate the skin, giving you a more luminous complexion. The initial clear skin treatment is 75 minutes, while follow-ups are 60 minutes each.
